The answer to this varies on a state by state basis. In most states, assisted living facilities, both large and small, are licensed, regulated and monitored in some manner. The monthly fees vary widely from one facility to another and is set by the facilities themselves, in most cases. Those fees take into acocunt a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the amount of care required, the cost of the real estate upon which the facility is built, the cost of compliance with Federal, state and local laws and regulations, the cost of utilities and overhead including labor costs, payroll taxes, insurance, and many other factors. Also, facilites are free to decide how competitive they wish their prices to be in comparison to other facilities.
